One of New Zealand’s largest food distribution centres has been given a refresh – meaning a more efficient supply of food and wares to your local.
Powell Fenwick as Principal Design Consultant were responsible for the Structural, Civil, Hydraulic and Mechanical services for the $70M redevelopment of the Foodstuffs Chilled and Frozen Distribution Centre. We were also Engineer to Contract and acted as an intermediary between the Contractor and the Client for the contract negotiations and construction process.
As one of the country’s largest refrigerated buildings, the centre has a refrigerated footprint of approximately 28,000m2 and an additional 2,000m2 of surrounding amenity buildings. It currently services all of the South Island’s Foodstuffs stores and other third parties.
Our team worked with Foodstuffs to consider the heavy logistical demands of the site. This included providing advice around docking systems and complex interlocking for safety and security considerations.
The project required a high level of collaboration between services, particularly due to the extensive refrigeration demands.
Given the size and nature of the building, all service elements were coordinated for ultimate efficiency. This flowed through to the building’s final outcomes: systems demonstrate operational efficiencies and are competitive with high level international industry.
