One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha
Christchurch City Council’s One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha, a project delivered by BESIX Watpac, is a fully enclosed, multi-use stadium designed to host major sporting events and concerts. It has a seating capacity of 30,000 for sporting matches and can host more than 37,000 people in concert modes, with 25,000 permanent and 5,000 temporary seating, an all-weather roof and a surrounding public realm that includes fan and community spaces. The stadium is a major achievement for Christchurch, forming a key part of the city’s long term regeneration plan.
Our Mechanical, Electrical and Hydraulic teams completed the design work through to developed design before handing over to BESIX Watpac’s sub-contractors to complete the design and installation. Our Acoustic team delivered the detailed design for the West Stand spaces, and our Civil team completed both the design and construction monitoring for the project. We worked closely with Mott MacDonald and BESIX Watpac throughout to help bring this complex venue to life for Christchurch City Council and our local community.
As part of our contribution, we delivered several key technical elements:
- Our mechanical team designed concealed mechanical services plant and co-ordinated significant kitchen extract ventilation and fresh air ventilation systems.
- Our Electrical team designed a resilient electrical network with built in 11kV network redundancy, capable of handling the electrical load required for the extensive fully electric facility (with no gas usage).
- Our Civil team delivered the full stormwater, wastewater, water supply and sitewide level design for the stadium precinct, coordinating complex and evolving requirements while integrating proprietary treatment systems, extensive raingardens, accessibility-focused pavements and precise field‑of‑play interfaces.
- Our Hydraulic team collaborated with Mott MacDonald, using their previous experience modelling stadiums, to create a hydraulic design that will handle peak flow conditions during major events.
- Our Acoustic team completed advanced acoustic modelling of the Function Room to deliver a high-quality acoustic environment suitable for large gatherings while aligning with the architectural design.
